Neben der Spur - Sag, es tut dir leid (tt7350732), Dr. Johannes Jessen, recently separated from his wife Nora, wants to spend a week alone with his daughter Charlotte. On his way home, he gets caught up in a police operation at Hamburg harbor where a seemingly recovered corpse is found. Commissioner Vincent Ruiz is waiting for Jessen at his apartment and asks for his help in a double murder case that happened three days ago. The suspect, Andreas Schaller, claims he only wanted to rescue the couple from the burning house. Jessen, in a conversation with Schaller who constantly talks to his imaginary "brother," gets the impression that the suspect may be telling the truth. Schaller describes a snowman and a woman who looks like a red-legged angel in front of the house. Jessen is convinced that the real culprit is someone with structured thinking ability, not a schizophrenic like Schaller. With the help of his friend Ruiz, Jessen learns the details of the body found in the Elbe River. It is said to be one of the "Elbe girls" who went missing two years ago. Jessen believes that both cases are connected and that Schaller saw the perpetrator, whom he refers to as the "snowman." Ruiz and his colleague Anna Bartholomé initially assume that the murdered couple's daughter was held captive and escaped by jumping out of the window. Jessen sees it differently and believes that Tanja Bredesen, one of the missing girls, sought refuge in the house after escaping her captor. The captor followed her, eliminated the two witnesses, and ultimately got rid of the girl as well. When Jessen finally returns home, he finds his daughter working for herself now. Unanswered calls to her cellphone lead him to discover that she was drugged at a nightclub. Worried about his daughter, Ruiz takes Charlotte to his house and makes sure she sobers up. The next day, when Jessen doesn't have time for her because of work and teaching, Charlotte packs her belongings and goes back to her mother. After her last lesson, psychologist Julia Allenstein contacts Jessen and asks for his help in proving the innocence of her patient, who had attempted suicide. While waiting to be released after recovering, the patient learns of the incriminating allegations against him from the press and takes a gun, believing he is guilty. Based on various indications, Ruiz and Jessen assume that the second "Elbe girl" is still alive. A phone call from Pia Hansen to her father confirms their assumption. She managed to escape but has no inclination to be rescued and is trying to explain where she is. Instead of success, all the patrol cars immediately sent to her fail to find her, as she was held captive in the dungeon by the abductor all year. Though he tries to divert Jessen from the wrong path, Jessen encounters a trap. He realizes that the abductor is possibly a police officer, so they couldn't find the escaped Pia Hansen because he was there first and could capture her again. After reviewing old files, Jessen is convinced that police officer Gregor Römer is the person they are looking for. Still on the wrong track and in action, Ruiz can convince Anna Bartholomé of his theory and they both call Römer from Jessen's apartment. Without expressing his suspicions about the police officer, Jessen shoots Bartholomé, who is wearing a bulletproof vest underneath her uniform. He then reluctantly forces Jessen to kill him, but promises to save Pia Hansen. The girl needs to be brought to the clinic as soon as possible, as Römer had given her a large dose of sleeping pills to keep her calm.
